What is Obesity?

Obesity is a serious, chronic disease that can have a negative effect on many systems in your body. People who are overweight or obese's have a much greater risk of developing serious conditions, such as:

  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • hypertension ( high blood pressure)
  • hepatosteatosis (fatty liver)
  • depression
  • inflammatory diseases ( 0steoarthritis)
  • sleep apnea
  • Stroke
  • dyslipidemia ( high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
  • asthma
  • gastrointestinal reflux

Hispanics and african- Americans both have a higher prevalence of obesity than Caucasian, with the greatest prevalences of obesity for both african- Americans and caucasians being found in the South and Midwest.
